For days now there had not been a Saturn. Now Saturn looked at the world.

The world didn't know it yet, but it was ready to riot. Deforestation in the Mato Grosso had driven Indians, miners, and laborers of all stripe east to Rio de Janeiro, overcrowding their already notorious favelas. There in the shadow of the statue of the Virgin, some of the worst police atrocities of the century had taken place, and some of the most savage reprisals.

In South Africa, the gap between the haves and have-nots had never been wider, with wealth still disproportionately distributed across racial lines. De Beers was rumored to be closing its mines and transferring billions out of the country. Millions of blacks were living at near-starvation levels, millions of whites in constant low-level terror.

Radical Islamic suicide attacks in Israel had transformed the streets of Jerusalem to a war zone. Repression against the kamikazes merely polarized the surrounding nations. Jewish retaliation, in the form of a fuel-air explosion on the outskirts of Mecca, had killed hundreds and brought the entire region to nuclear twilight.

Defenses were in place on the Floating Islands. They would put up a fight worth seeing.

In the main, members of the Council were playing their usual games, taking their accustomed risks, with no extraordinary defensive precautions. It would seem they thought themselves immortal, untouchable. Saturn smiled in anticipation.

Chaz Kato…Saturn had feared Chaz Kato lost, killed in a stupid and trivial accident. It seemed he would recover. He would travel to India aboard the dirigible Gilgamesh. The timing was elegant.

Lenore Myles was…gone.

Saturn hadn't expected that. He narrowed his focus.

Records: a jet train to Portland, Oregon, to see yet another doctor. Records: examination fee, prescription fee, both paid. Cab fare…accumulating. No cameras on the cab.

Saturn, busy with a thousand other things, watched Lenore in motion. Amtrak station. A ticket southbound to Studio City…
